Managed or unmanaged switch?
An unmanaged switch just works — plug it in and every port talks to every other at full speed, ideal for simply adding ports. A managed switch adds VLANs, QoS, link aggregation, and monitoring, which matter once you segment networks, run VoIP or cameras, or administer remotely. Smart/Lite-managed models sit in between at a small premium.
Do I need 2.5G or 10G Ethernet?
Gigabit remains plenty for internet access and everyday use — few home connections exceed it. Move to 2.5G or 10G when you shuttle large files to a NAS, edit video over the network, or link switches together; many models offer a few faster uplink ports (often SFP+ fiber) on an otherwise Gigabit switch, which is the cost-effective middle path.
What is PoE and how much PoE budget do I need?
Power over Ethernet sends electricity down the network cable, so access points, cameras, and phones need no outlet. Each device draws a set wattage (PoE ~15W, PoE+ ~30W, PoE++ up to ~90W) and the switch has a total budget — add up your devices' draw with headroom. A '120W budget' 8-port switch can't run eight 30W cameras.
How many ports should I buy?
Count today's wired devices, then buy roughly double — wired gear accumulates (NAS, consoles, cameras, access points), and an uplink port to your router is always occupied. Jumping from 8 to 16 or 24 ports usually costs far less than replacing the switch a year later.
