Why is my computer so slow?

The five-minute reset
- Restart (a full restart clears far more than closing the lid or letting it sleep).
- Install any pending updates, then restart again.
- Close programs and browser tabs you're not using.
Trim startup programs
- Windows: Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Startup apps → disable things you don't need at boot (chat apps, game launchers, updaters).
- Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items.
Free up disk space
A drive that's nearly full slows everything down. Empty the Recycle Bin / Trash, uninstall programs you don't use, and move big photo and video folders to an external drive or the cloud. Aim for at least 10–15% free space.
Scan for malware
Malware quietly eats performance. Run a full scan with your built-in protection (Windows Security / Microsoft Defender on a PC). See the scams guide for how to avoid fake "cleaner" tools that make things worse.
When it's the hardware
If the computer is several years old and still slow after all of the above, adding memory (RAM) or replacing an old hard drive with an SSD makes a large difference, often the difference between replacing the machine and keeping it for years.
